Careers in the Culinary and Pastry Field

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook for 2006-07 for Chefs, Cooks and Food Preparation Workers: “Job openings for chefs, cooks, and food preparation workers are expected to be plentiful through 2014.  Employment growth will be spurred by increases in population, household income, and leisure time that will allow people to dine out and take vacations more often.”  “Restaurant industry sales are expected to reach a record $511 billion in 925,000 restaurant locations in 2006” according to the National Restaurant Association’s 2006 Restaurant Industry Forecast.

The need for trained people is the single biggest challenge facing the restaurant industry today. This means that the best trained chefs will command increasing salaries and benefits in the years to come.
